How to Measure Your Pet's Neck for a Collar That Sits Comfortably
A calm, practical fitting routine for choosing a decorative collar with enough room to move, rest, and be supervised comfortably.
Start with a soft tape
Measure at the point where the collar will sit, rather than high under the jaw. A soft sewing tape gives the most reliable result; if you only have string, mark the overlap and measure it flat against a ruler.
Take the measurement while your pet is standing naturally. A lifted head, a curled posture, or a thick coat compressed by your hand can all change the number.
Leave breathing room
For a decorative collar, leave space for two flat fingers between the collar and the neck. The collar should look considered without pressing into the coat or limiting normal movement.
If your pet is between two adjustment ranges, choose the range that leaves room for a coat change, seasonal layering, and a little natural movement.
Check the whole silhouette
Look at the collar from the front, side, and above. The closure should rest away from the throat, and beadwork should sit evenly without twisting toward one side.
Remove the piece for unsupervised play, sleep, crate time, swimming, or any moment when it could catch. A beautiful collar should never replace a walking harness or a safety collar.
